Tuesday morning Veronica sighed as she grabbed her books out of her locker. She heard her boyfriend laughing behind her and when she turned around, she was pleased to feel his arms pulling her toward him.
“Good morning my lady,” Logan smiled brightly as he leaned down and placed a kiss on her lips.
“Morning to you too handsome,” she smiled back.
“So just how bad does your dad hate me?” Logan questioned.
“Hate is
such a strong word,” Veronica said, biting her lip.
“So am I barred from your house for life?”
“Like I said last night on the phone, it’ll be awhile before he gets those pictures out of his head, but he’ll come around,” Veronica promised.
“Because he loves his little girl so much?”
“Because I’m willing to pout until he comes around,” Veronica shrugged. “Being an only child does have its perks you know.”
Logan let out a chuckle. “Veronica Mars, my sweet manipulating girlfriend, oh I love thee.”
“Have
you ever seen the puppy eyes? Trust me, they’re kinda hard to resist,” Veronica teased.
“Oh yeah?”
“Yep!” Veronica spoke as she bobbed her head up and down.
Logan shook his head as he led her down the hall. “So how are you doing with that whole thing with Jake Kane and your mother?”
Veronica lowered her head. “I think I’m still in shock,” she frowned. “I mean, my mom and Duncan’s dad, that’s just so…”
“Wrong? Yeah well it’s not like you two were around back then,” Logan frowned.
“I
know that,” Veronica huffed, “I just don’t get why it was never mentioned!”
“Because your mom didn’t want you to know you were dating her ex-boyfriend’s son?”
“Thank you for stating the obvious,” Veronica spoke as they got near her classroom.
“That’s what I’m here for. Well, that and to be incredibly sexy,” Logan smirked.
“And you do it
so well,” Veronica smiled.
“I do
everything well baby,” Logan winked.
Veronica rolled her eyes at Logan and shook her head in amusement. Her boyfriend really was the total package, sadly he knew that better than anyone. “So speaking of Jake Kane, I was thinking maybe I could talk to him. I mean he had baby pictures of me, so he has something to do with whatever secret Lilly knows.”
“You want to talk to Jake Kane?” Logan questioned, widening his eyes.
“Yeah, I was thinking maybe I could get Meg to go with me.”
Logan shook his head, “Veronica, that’s a bad idea!”
“But…”
“It’s not even debatable, Jake Kane isn’t going to tell you anything! It’ll only cause more trouble.”
“But if I could just see his reaction to my questions,” Veronica frowned, “I think it would help.”
“Veronica, you don’t know the real Jake Kane! Lilly doesn’t get her ways from just her mother okay? And to suggest taking the Disney princess with you as backup?” Logan questioned with a laugh. “I’m curious just what do you think Meg can do if Jake gets angry?”
Veronica crossed her arms against her chest and backed against the wall, “I don’t need backup Logan, and can you leave Meg alone? I just thought that maybe if I talk to Jake it would answer a few questions. Since my dad isn’t real thrilled with you right now, I figured Meg was the best choice.”
“It’s just a really bad idea, Tink,” Logan spoke, his tone calmer than before. “I’ll help you find answers, but you need to leave Jake Kane alone.”
“But…”
“Veronica, nothing good could come of it okay?”
“Yeah, fine whatever…”
“I know what I’m talking about here.”
“I guess,” she finally spoke with a frown. “I just want answers, Logan. I really need to know what’s going on.”
Logan pulled Veronica into a hug and kissed her temple gently. “I know baby, and trust me we’ll figure all this out.”
“I hope so,” Veronica nodded, although deep down she couldn’t help but wonder if she’d ever know what Lilly was holding over her head.

Veronica walked out of her English class and smirked when she saw Weevil propped up against the wall waiting on her. As she walked toward him, she watched as he pushed himself off the fall with his foot and made his way to her side.
“Aww, waiting for me after class now? I’m touched,” she joked.
“Yeah well, you keep wearing them short skirts of yours…”
“You really don’t want to finish that sentence do you?” Veronica questioned eyeing him. “My boyfriend is extremely jealous.”
Weevil grunted, “V, do I look like I’m afraid of a rich boy like Echolls?”
“A big bad biker like you? Of course not,” Veronica shrugged. “So exactly why are you here waiting for me today?”
“I got this cousin that used to work for the Kanes,” Weevil answered without a beat, “Claudia moved away when she got married, but she’s suppose to be coming for a visit this week.”
“Yeah? You think she might be able to tell us anything?”
“Well I figure it’s worth a shot right? I’m gonna give her a call as soon as she gets here,” Weevil nodded. “Maybe she knows something about all those stupid clues Lilly’s been tossing at you.”
“Let’s hope your cousin heard some of the Kane gossip,” Veronica agreed.
Weevil chuckled, “Claudia can be pretty nosy, so I’m thinkin’ she’ll know something that might help you out.”
Veronica lowered her head, “I was thinking about talking to Jake Kane myself but Logan thinks it’s a bad idea.”
“Maybe because it is,” Weevil spoke quickly stopping in the hall. “I hate to say it, but your pretty boy has a point. Kane is bad news V, you don’t need to be running off askin’ him questions that’s just gonna get him curious.”
“I don’t see what the big deal is,” Veronica frowned. “I mean really, what could he possibly do?”
“If this secret Lilly’s got is something he don’t want out?” Weevil spoke with a frown, “I don’t think you wanta know what he could do.”
“Apparently pessimism is in the air today,” Veronica frowned.
“Are you sure it’s not just good ole’ common sense?” Weevil questioned.
“What was I thinking,” Veronica spoke rolling her eyes. “I’m wrong, and you men folk are right.”
“Yeah well, don’t beat yourself up about it,” Weevil nodded with a tiny smile.
Veronica was about to speak again when she saw Meg waving at her down the hall. “So, if you hear anything from your cousin, you’ll let me know right?”
“First person I’ll call,” Weevil spoke firmly.
“Thanks for your help on this,” Veronica smiled gently.
“Yeah, well you know, you’ll owe me one someday,” Weevil shrugged.
“Just as long as it’s not breaking you out of jail, I’m good on it,” Veronica nodded. “Anyway, I need to go talk to Meg. Let me know what you find out.”
With a wave of her hand, Veronica turned and headed toward Meg. She had called Meg the night before hoping she would go with her if she decided to talk to Jake Kane. She was aware that Jake went to the Neptune Athletic Club every Thursday day, and it just so happened that Meg often went there herself. Now however, with Logan telling her talking to Jake was a bad idea, she really wasn’t sure what she wanted to do.
“Veronica hey!” Meg spoke as she hurried to walk beside Veronica. “How is everything going today?”
“Well, Logan thinks talking to Jake Kane is a horrible idea,” Veronica frowned. “Weevil does too actually.”
“Maybe it is,” Meg frowned.
“I just think it needs to be done.”
“Well if you want me to go with you still, I can,” Meg nodded. “We can go over to the club Thursday after school.”
“I don’t know,” Veronica sighed, “I need to think about it first.”
“Well we could always hit the mall instead,” Meg smiled brightly.
“The mall actually sounds fun and it’s been awhile since I actually had fun.”
“Hey, it’s all going to work out,” Meg spoke softly resting a hand on her friend’s shoulder.
“I’m going to hold you to that,” Veronica smiled.
“It is,” Meg promised. “You deserve to be happy Veronica, and you will, just wait and see!”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Two days later Veronica found herself standing in Neptune’s Athletic Club with Meg. She had thought long and hard about everything Logan had said to her, but deep down she knew she had to talk to Jake Kane.
“I don’t know about this, Veronica. If Logan is against it…”
“He’s totally against it.”
“But maybe if you just explained things to him again.”
“Not going to work,” Veronica frowned.
“I still don’t think it’s a good idea. Why is it so important to talk to Lilly’s dad anyway?”
Veronica turned to look at Meg Manning and sighed. She knew Logan was going to be furious when he found out she went behind his back to talk to Jake Kane. She wouldn’t be surprised if Weevil didn’t freak for that matter, but still it had to be done. Her mother was nowhere to be found, so Duncan and Lilly’s father was her only shot at finding out the truth she was seeking.
“Because my mother is missing, and he may be the only person that can give me answers! They dated in high school, and now I’m finding out that he’s had a baby picture of me all this time?”
“Maybe he was still friends with your mom when you were born? I mean my parents have baby pictures of their friend’s kids.”
“So why did Lilly deem it important enough to send me?”
“Because she’s playing with your mind?” Meg suggested with a frown. “I don’t really know.”
“All I know is, Jake Kane comes here every Thursday at this time to either work out or play tennis. If I can talk to him, maybe I can at least get an idea of what’s going on.”
“You know Veronica,” Meg frowned, “I think sometimes its better to leave things alone.”
“Yeah?” Veronica questioned. “I don’t, not this anyway.”
She watched as Meg let out a sigh and Veronica lowered her head. She would love to be
just a teenage girl, loving her boyfriend and picturing happy ever after. It had been that way with Duncan, sweet, simple, and oh so very normal. Thanks to Lilly and her mother, she didn’t feel normal anymore.
Logan was a different kind of boyfriend than Duncan. He was a
better boyfriend and she wouldn’t give him up for anything. She just hated that she had to worry about cameras, and secrets, and parents who only pretended to care. It wasn’t fair to either of them, but it was what it was.
“So where does Logan think you are anyway?”
“Oh, we’re at the mall,” Veronica spoke forcing a smile. “I’ll be stopping by there on the way home, you know, so I won’t actually be lying.”
“I still think Logan would understand…”
“There is no way, you didn’t see his reaction.” Veronica frowned, “I have to do this without him.”
Veronica still wasn’t used to doing things alone. Even after the blow up with Lilly, Logan had been there for her. When he had been suspended from school, she just started hanging out with Mac more, so this, this was new to her. Facing Jake Kane alone was nerve racking, but not knowing the truth was so much worse.
She let out a sigh when she saw Jake Kane coming into the gym area. She frowned to herself and then looked over at Meg, “I’ll be back in a few.”
“Are you sure about this Veronica?”
“No, but I have to do it.”
Meg nodded her head in understanding and forced a smile, “Veronica, it’ll all work out in the end.”
Veronica forced a sad smile and then turned with a sigh. She saw Jake look her way and he frowned slightly. With a deep breath, Veronica walked slowly toward her former best friend’s father. She watched him carefully, remembering all her father had taught her about reading people. She had to study Jake Kane, study his actions and his words, and find some clue into what his family was hiding from her.
“Mr. Kane,” Veronica spoke her voice coming out a bit squeakier than she would have liked.
Jake Kane walked a few steps toward her and stopped, “Veronica, how are you?”
“I’m okay, considering,” Veronica spoke with a sigh.
”I was really sorry to hear about you and Lilly,” Jake frowned. “I thought you were good for her.”
“Things change, I guess. Mr. Kane can I ask you something?”
Jake stared down at her blankly and frowned, “I suppose, is something wrong Veronica?”
Veronica lowered her head and kicked the floor with her shoe. “I saw a yearbook, and it had a photo of you with my mother. I never realized you two dated in high school?”
Veronica watched as Jake’s eyes widened and he frowned, “I think you’re mistaken Veronica. I never dated your mother.”
“I saw the picture Mr. Kane, I know you two were together in high school,” Veronica spoke. “I just wondered, did you stay friends with her? After high school I mean?”
“Veronica, that was a very long time ago,” Jake spoke, shifting his eyes. “I went out with your mother a couple of times, we were just good friends.”
“Did you stay friends?”
“Just as most people do after high school we drifted. Your mother had her life, and I had mine.”
“I just thought,” Veronica frowned biting her lip, “I thought maybe since you knew her back then, you might be able to help me. I thought, I thought you might know where she went.”
“I’m sorry,” Jake frowned, “I wish I could help you Veronica, but I really can’t.”
“Oh,” Veronica spoke lowering her head, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you.”
“Please, don’t apologize Veronica. I know you must miss your mother terribly.”
Veronica let out a sigh. She had never been good at lying, but if she could pull it off, maybe, just maybe she could get a few of the answers she needed. “It’s just that, well, Lilly told me once she thought she saw a picture of me as a baby in your office. I told her that she was crazy, but then when I found out you knew my mom a long time ago, I just thought, that maybe you two stayed friends or something.”
She watched Jake closely as he shuffled his weight to one side and looked around nervously. “Lilly must have been mistaken Veronica. I don’t have any photos of you,” he spoke quickly. “I’m sure she got confused,” he added as his eyes darted away from her and to the ground.
“Yeah,” Veronica nodded, “I guess so.”
“Listen Veronica, I have a meeting to get too,” Jake spoke, his voice pitchy, “I really need to be going.”
There was nervousness to Jake Kane that Veronica had never seen before. His usual calm demeanor had faded and it was easy to see that he wanted to get away from her as fast as possible. He reminded her of Duncan and his behavior whenever she brought up Lilly. Whatever was going on, Veronica’s questions had shaken up the head of the Kane family.
“No, it’s fine. I’m sorry I wasted your time Mr. Kane,” Veronica sighed.
“Veronica?” Jake spoke with a frown, “I really hope everything works out for you.”
“Yeah,” Veronica answered back, “I hope so too.”
She turned away from Jake and let out a deep breath. Jake Kane was lying to her, just like his son had done. Veronica was now convinced that the whole Kane family knew Lilly’s secret. Letting out a deep breath Veronica only knew one thing for sure, she was going to find out what the Kane’s were hiding from her, and she was going to find out today.

Logan watched as Mac stared blankly at his computer, “I can’t believe you managed to crash your computer.”
“Yeah well, some of us aren’t as brilliant as you are.”
“Fixed,” Mac smiled after a few clicks of the mouse. “I really don’t know how you people managed without me for so long.”
“We usually just paid people to do these things for us,” Logan smirked.
“That’s really kind of sad.”
“Not really, it’s not like it cost me anything,” Logan shrugged.
Mac stood and shook her head, “I really wish I could understand the minds of the rich.”
“We are an interesting bunch,” Logan laughed. “Speaking of rich, how are things going with Luke?”
Mac arched an eyebrow, “Logan, I don’t do girl talk.”
“Mac, it was just a simple question,” Logan mocked with tiny grin.
“A question I choose not to answer,” Mac shrugged.
“And all this time I thought we had gotten close,” Logan frowned, “Mac, I have to admit, this cuts a bit.”
“Have Veronica patch the wound when she gets here then,” Mac smirked as she slid out of the computer chair.
“Only if she’ll do it in a nurses uniform,” Logan answered back arching a eyebrow.
“There’s an image I’ll have to burn out of my head,” Mac cringed.
“Hey Logan, you in here?” Casey’s voice suddenly bounded from the hallway. The tall boy stuck his head in the door, glanced from Logan to Mac, and smirked. “I interrupted a moment, didn’t I?”
“Yeah Case, we were planning our secret elopement. Looks like the cat is out of the bag now though huh?” Logan spoke sarcastically.
“Hey, don’t let me stop you,” Casey laughed.
Mac turned to Casey and crossed her arms defensively. “I heard you were harassing a couple freshman in the computer lab today?”
“You mean those geeks?” Casey questioned.
“Geeks, nerds, it’s all the same I guess,” Mac shrugged. “I just didn’t realize you had been taking pointers from Dick on how to be a jerk.”
“Actually, I’m self taught,” Casey smirked, “I didn’t realize you took offense to me joking around with a couple freshman.”
“You made one of them cry!” Mac huffed.
“So? It was funny!”
“It was cruel!”
“Seriously, if I had made Dick or Sean cry, you would have been all for it! I don’t see what the difference is.”
“Dick and Sean are idiots, those boys are harmless,” Mac spoke rolling her eyes.
“Their not at harmless as you think,” Casey muttered.
“Should I leave the two of you alone? If you need a room, we have plenty,” Logan chimed in as he plopped down on his bed.
Mac glared at Logan before turning back to Casey. “What did you mean by that?”
“Forget it,” Casey frowned.
“If you were hinting at something, then just say it.”
“Fine, those harmless kids you keep yammering about? I overheard them running their mouths about you and it pissed me off!”
“What did they say?” Mac questioned.
“They were talking about how you sold out to hang out with a bunch of 09er imbeciles. I was in a bad mood so I just yelled at them okay?”
Logan watched as Mac’s eyes widened and he frowned, “Mac, you had to know it would happen…”
“I didn’t sellout!”
“Well they seem to think otherwise,” Casey shrugged. “Face it, you’re one of us now.”
“But I…”
“You hang out at Logan Echolls’ house, you go shopping with Veronica Mars and Meg Manning, and Luke and I have both given you rides home, what did you think people were going to say?” Casey questioned.
“I don’t know, that I was finally figuring out how to be social?” Mac spoke with a huge sigh.
“You’re welcome by the way,” Casey smirked.
“Excuse me?”
“You know, I defended your honor and all…”
“Yeah, thanks for that,” Mac grumbled. “I need to go. It’s time to figure out the rest of my life.”
“That’s dramatic,” Logan laughed.
“Well now that I’m one of you,” Mac frowned. “Perhaps I’ll wear pink tomorrow to school, and buy a cute little sweater to throw over my shoulders. Think I should pick up some peach lip gloss while I’m at it?”
“She mocks our people’s ways,” Casey huffed teasingly.
“I mock the world in which we live,” Mac spoke plainly. “I’ll see you two later,” she added as she headed toward Logan’s bedroom door.
“Hey Mac?” Casey called after her.
“Yeah?”
“Just so you know, those boys are probably just jealous of you now.”
“Yeah hanging out with me? Of course their jealous,” Logan added.
Mac forced a smile, “I’m in the presence of greatest. How did I get so lucky?” She quipped shaking her head as she headed out the door.
Logan sat up on his bed and smirked, “Casey Gant that was very nice of you, defending Mac against those, big, bad, evil, freshman nerds!”
“I don’t want to hear it,” Casey grumbled.
“You made them cry,” Logan laughed loudly. “You made them cry defending Mac! Dude, Luke is going to be so displeased when he hears this.”
“That I stood up for the girl he likes? Yeah, he’s going to be real upset.”
“Hey if you don’t see it, then I’m not saying a word,” Logan spoke thoroughly amused.
“See what?”
“Nothing,” Logan smiled brightly, “nothing at all!”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Veronica’s mind was racing as she fell on her bed with a thud. So many things ran through her head as she tried to piece together the mystery that was apparently her life. The hints Lilly had given her weren’t much to go on, but the looks on the faces of the Kane men, had been enough to terrify her.
Her mother had dated Jake Kane that much she knew to be true. She also knew everything that came out of Jake’s mouth when they talked had been a lie. He had hid it better than Duncan had, but she could see his discomfort and it enough to send her mind places she wasn’t ready to go.
Had her mother had an affair with Jake? If she had, Veronica reasoned it still wouldn’t explain the baby pictures. It wouldn’t explain any of Lilly’s clues really. Groaning Veronica picked up her phone and nervously dialed a familiar number. If she was going to get answers, they would have to come from the weakest Kane, unfortunately for her, he didn’t want to talk either. The sound of voicemail caused Veronica to roll her eyes, the sound of the beep made her stomach drop slightly.
“Duncan, this is Veronica, call me when you get this. We really need to talk,” she spoke clicking her phone off with a sigh.
“Veronica Mars, paging Veronica Mars!” Logan’s voice suddenly sounded loudly.
Veronica jumped up and ran to her door to see Logan coming up the hall. “Logan what are you doing?”
“Well as your father was leaving I was coming in, so he insisted that I come up here and have my way with you. He said it might lift your spirits,” Logan smirked.
“Try again?” Veronica questioned.
“I waited until your dad left and let myself in?”
“Sounds about right,” Veronica nodded as Logan suddenly grabbed her and lifted her in his arms.
“So I missed you today,” he smiled placing a quick kiss on her lips. “I mean, I really, really missed you.”
“Well that’s good to hear,” Veronica laughed.
“What? You didn’t miss me too?” Logan asked sitting Veronica down.
“Of course I did!”
Logan smiled brightly and Veronica couldn’t help but feel guilty about lying to him. Maybe Meg had been right, maybe he would have understood her need to talk to Jake Kane, but it didn’t matter now. She had lied to her boyfriend, and she knew Logan wasn’t going to take it well.
“So I had a interesting day today,’ Logan chimed. “Mac and Casey were at each others throats again! There’s something weird going on with those two.”
Veronica laughed, “Mac and Casey? Logan, have you forgotten that Mac is crazy about Luke?”
“Did
you know that Casey make a couple freshman cry because they called Mac a sellout?”
“Casey has always had the ability to make people cry,” Veronica shrugged. “He probably just got bored playing the guy next door.”
“Okay sugarplum, whatever you say!”
“Are you saying I’m wrong?” Veronica teased.
“The lady is always right,” Logan spoke with a smirk.
“That she is!”
Logan strolled over to Veronica’s bed and sat down. “Did you and Meg have fun at the mall? Did you buy anything you’d like to model for me? Lingerie perhaps?”
Veronica bit down on her lip, “I didn’t go to the mall today.”
“Oh? Where’d you go?” Logan asked his voice full of curiosity.
Veronica knew the second she told Logan she’d been to see Jake Kane, he was going to be mad. She had dreaded telling him from the moment she got home, but she knew she had no choice. He had a right to know, even if he was upset with her.
Veronica let out a deep sigh, “I did something you’re not going to like. I went to see Jake Kane.”
Veronica watched as Logan’s eyes widened and he let out a deep breath, “I thought we talked about that.”
“Yeah,” Veronica nodded, “I know you said it was a bad idea, but I had to do it Logan.”
“So what? You just lied to me? Did you even plan on going to the mall or was that a cover-up?”
Veronica frowned, “I knew I couldn’t tell you the truth when you reacted the way you did at your house. If you had reacted different…”
“You would have told me the truth?”
“Yeah,” Veronica nodded. “I just knew you would be upset, so I figured if I told you I was going to the mall with Meg, everything would be okay. She said not telling you was a bad idea from the start…”
“So you took Meg with you?” Logan chuckled angrily as he stood to his feet.
“I didn’t want to go alone.”
“And of course you couldn’t tell
me you were going!”
“You were totally against it!” Veronica snapped. “What was I suppose to do?”
“I would have gone with you Veronica,” Logan spoke with a frown. “I wouldn’t have liked it, but I would have gone!”
“I can’t believe you’re this upset,” Veronica frowned.
“I’m upset because you lied to me, Veronica. You planned this little trip and lied about it. You didn’t trust me enough to tell me the truth!”
“I told you about it, and you shot it down!” Veronica spoke crossing her arms. “Logan you’re seriously overreacting!”
“No, you’re under reacting! I watched Duncan with you last week! I saw the look in his eyes, and I know what Lilly is capable of! Those people are not to be trusted, and you just ran in there talking to Jake about something as huge as this?”
“I played dumb Logan,” Veronica frowned, “I’m not stupid you know!”
“Really? Because tipping off Jake Kane? That’s not the brightest thing you’ve done!”
Veronica shook her head and ran her hand down the side of her face. “Are you even interested in what I found out?”
“Enlighten me, did the all powerful Jake Kane tell you what his daughter is hiding from you?”
“No,” Veronica spoke bluntly, “I think he knows though. They all know, I could tell. He lied about everything, and he was all shifty.”
“A Kane being shifty? You’re kidding me right?”
“Glad you find this so amusing,” Veronica huffed.
”Amusing?” Logan questioned stunned. “Veronica I’m scared for you, don’t you see that? I’ve watched what it’s been like for you, and it scares me! I don’t want to see you hurt, and the Kanes? They’ve hurt you!”
Veronica frowned as she realized Logan was telling her the truth. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have lied.”
“No, you shouldn’t have. You need to trust me, baby,” Logan sighed.
“I screwed up,” Veronica frowned. “I just needed answers.”
“So you lied to me?”
“I’m sorry,” Veronica whispered.
“What if things had gotten out of control Veronica? Did you expect Meg to protect you?”
“We were at the Club, and Jake never even raised his voice. He was more interested in getting out of there…”
“But what if, Veronica? What if he had became as angry as Duncan did?”
Veronica shook her head, “I said I’m sorry!”
“Yeah,” Logan frowned, “I heard you.”
“And you’re still mad?”
“I’m not mad!” Logan declared. “I’m upset that you lied to me, yeah. I mean, I know you can do whatever you want, but still Veronica,” he paused. “Meg was your backup? We discussed that Veronica! What if something had gone wrong with your little plan?”
Veronica lowered her head and frowned, “I’m really sorry Logan, I am.”
“We’re suppose to be in this together, Veronica,” Logan whispered.
“I know.”
Logan’s eyes seemed to relax a bit as he moved his hand out and touched her shoulder, “I want to help you Veronica, but I need to know what’s going on.”
“Yeah, okay,” Veronica nodded. “So does that mean, we’re good?”
“We will be,” Logan promised, “I just need time to let this digest.”
“I can handle that,” Veronica spoke with a worried tone.
“So yeah,” Logan frowned, “I think I’m going to go. Maybe tomorrow we can sit down and figure out where to go next with this Lilly thing?”
“Yeah, that’d be good,” Veronica spoke forcing a tight smile.
Logan closed his eyes and he leaned down and placed a kiss on Veronica’s forehead, “I love you Mars, don’t forget that.”
“Logan, I do trust you, with everything, I really do.”
“That’s good to hear,” Logan nodded, “I’ll see you in the morning okay? Pickup you up like always?”
“So we’re really okay?” Veronica questioned again.
"We'll work it out," Logan offered as he walked over to the door. With a forced smile and a tiny wave, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Veronica alone with her thoughts once more.
Veronica let out a groan as she fell down on her bed. How had she managed to screw things up so bad ly? If she would have just trusted Logan , everything would be okay. She heard her front door slam shut and with a frown, she ran over to her window and watched as Logan drove away.
The sound of her phone ringing brought her back to reality and with a frown she turned and found it on the corner of her bed. When she saw Duncan's name flashing up at her she didn't know if she wanted to scream or cry.
"Hello?" She answered sitting down on the bed.
"Veronica, hey it's me."
" Duncan, I, um, look I'm sorry I called before," she spoke into the phone. "Just forget about it okay?"
"Veronica, wait," Duncan spoke his voice rushed.
"What is it? Look I really need to go, calling you was a really bad idea."
"No," she heard Duncan speak, "Veronica I can't do this anymore, I just can't."
His voice was shaking and Veronica couldn't help but wonder what he was talking about. " Duncan what's wrong?"
"You deserve to know, I mean I should have told you sooner, it's just, I couldn't, and now, with Lilly and everything… You just deserve to know."
"Know what?" Veronica asked quickly.
"Can you meet me at the beach? At our old spot?"
"I don't know…" Veronica's voice trailed.
"Please, before Lilly does something stupid, just meet me there okay? I'll tell you everything you've wanted to know I promise."
Veronica swallowed hard, "I'll meet you there in an hour," she agreed.
"And Veronica? I'm so sorry," Duncan's voice cracked as the phone went dead.
Veronica stared at the phone as her hands began to shake. One hour, and she would know Lilly's secret. In one hour, her life might change forever, and she had no idea how to feel about that.
I can't wait to see how you have Veronica react to Duncan's news. I love this story, great chapter, can't wait to see where you go with the rest of it.
